Top 10 most AFCON winners in history
Egypt remain the most successful nation in AFCON history, with seven titles. However, in recent years, Egypt have struggled to maintain their strength at the continental level, failing to win the trophy in the last 16 years despite having superstar Mohamed Salah. In addition to their seven titles, Egypt have finished as runners-up three times (1962, 2017, 2021), third place three times (1963, 1970, 1974), and fourth place four times (1976, 1980, 1984 and 2025).
Second on the list are Cameroon with five titles, achieved across two dominant periods: 1984 - 1988 and 2000 - 2002. Third are Ghana, whose last AFCON title came in 1982. Ghana have also finished as runners-up five times, the joint-most in tournament history alongside Nigeria. The Super Eagles rank fourth with three AFCON titles, level with Ivory Coast.
The most recent AFCON 2025 champions, Senegal, have won the tournament twice and are tied for sixth place with Algeria and DR Congo. Meanwhile, runners-up Morocco are still waiting for their second AFCON title, having last lifted the trophy in 1976.

List of 5 recent AFCON winners
Senegal
Senegal won the AFCON titles in 2021 and again in 2025. They have built a strong core of players such as Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy, who led the team to both triumphs. In the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco, Senegal were involved in one of the most controversial finals in tournament history, briefly leaving the pitch to protest a refereeing decision before returning to secure the trophy.
Ivory Coast
Despite not having the strongest squad on paper, Ivory Coast won the 2023 edition of the tournament. Led by Franck Kessie and striker Sebastien Haller, they defeated a Nigeria side featuring Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze to claim their third AFCON title, eight years after their previous triumph in 2015.
Algeria
Algeria lifted the AFCON trophy in 2019, with captain Riyad Mahrez leading the team to a 1-0 victory over Senegal in the final. The only goal was scored by Baghdad Bounedjah. Algeria faced several challenges on their way to the title. After beating Guinea 3-0, they needed a penalty shootout to eliminate Ivory Coast, before Mahrez scored a dramatic last-minute free kick to secure a 2-1 win in the semifinal.
Cameroon
Cameroon also had a dramatic path to AFCON glory. In the group stage, they drew against Burkina Faso and Gabon, but defeated Guinea-Bissau to advance to the knockout rounds. They then beat Senegal on penalties, won 2-0 against Ghana in the semifinal, and defeated Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the final to secure their fifth AFCON title.
Nigeria
Nigeria last won the AFCON in 2013, when the squad included players such as John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses. After edging past Ethiopia in the group stage, Nigeria defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in the quarterfinals, Mali 4-1 in the semifinals, and finally beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final, with Sunday Mba scoring the decisive goal.
