Revealed: The five members of Michael Carrick’s coaching team at Man United

With Michael Carrick’s return to Manchester United, the new head coach has also brought in his own backroom staff. His coaching team will consist of five members: Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans, Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate and Craig Mawson.

Carrick was appointed United’s new head coach on Monday, a week after the club decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim. Alongside the Portuguese manager, United also paid compensation to release his coaching staff, leaving Carrick to assemble a new team to support him.

Darren Fletcher had initially been expected to remain with the first team, but United opted to move him back into a role with the U18s. Following Carrick’s appointment, the club confirmed three new additions to the coaching staff: Jonny Evans, Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate, with Travis Binnion and Craig Mawson completing the group.

Jonny Evans

The Northern Ireland international retired last season after making his final appearance in a Manchester United shirt. He remained at the club in a youth development role before deciding to join Carrick’s coaching staff, marking the next step in his post-playing career.

Steve Holland

Although less familiar to United supporters, Holland brings extensive coaching experience. He previously worked at Chelsea under Roberto Di Matteo, winning the Champions League in 2012, and later served on the coaching staffs of José Mourinho and Antonio Conte before leaving the club in 2017.

Holland then joined the England national team as an assistant to Gareth Southgate and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up at Euro 2020. Most recently, he worked at Yokohama F. Marinos in 2025 before linking up with Carrick at United in 2026.

Jonathan Woodgate

Woodgate enjoyed a long playing career with clubs including Leeds United, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. He also spent three seasons at Real Madrid, although injuries limited his appearances. After retiring in 2016, he moved into coaching and worked at Middlesbrough during the 2019/20 season.

His most recent role was at Bournemouth, where he served as caretaker manager in early 2021. Despite guiding the team to the play-offs, Bournemouth failed to secure promotion to the Premier League, and Woodgate left the club at the end of the season.

Travis Binnion

Binnion was part of Darren Fletcher’s interim coaching staff for matches against Burnley and Brighton. Prior to that, he had been working as United’s U21s coach and has been heavily involved in youth development since 2021.

During the 2021/22 season, Binnion led the U18s to FA Youth Cup glory, with a 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest in the final at Old Trafford.

Craig Mawson

Craig Mawson is a former professional goalkeeper and holds a UEFA A goalkeeping licence. As a player, he represented several English clubs, including Burnley, Hereford United and Droylsden, but is best known for his time at Morecambe, where he made 123 appearances.

After retiring, Mawson spent nine years working at Burnley’s academy between 2010 and 2019 before joining Manchester United, where he has been serving as the club’s goalkeeping coach.
