OFFICIAL: Tottenham complete Conor Gallagher signing from Atletico Madrid for £35 million
Since the start of the January transfer window, both Aston Villa and Tottenham were linked with a move for the Atletico Madrid midfielder. In the end, Spurs won the race to secure the 25-year-old’s signature. Gallagher is expected to earn around £210,000 per week at his new club.
Gallagher joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 from Chelsea for a fee of £33 million. During his time in Spain, he was largely used as a rotation option rather than a regular starter. Since the beginning of the 2025/26 season, he completed the full 90 minutes in just one La Liga match, against Real Oviedo in November.
This is not the first time Tottenham have shown interest in Gallagher. During the 2023/24 season, when Chelsea were reportedly open to selling him, Blues supporters unfurled a banner reading “Chelsea since birth” ahead of a Premier League match against Spurs in May 2024.
Gallagher said after completing the move: “I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club. I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same.
“It was very easy. It happened very quickly and I’m ready to get on the pitch. I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together.”
Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank added: “Conor is a top midfielder who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad. He is still young, so has plenty of room for improvement, but also brings huge experience from the Premier League, La Liga and the England national team.”
Gallagher arrives at Spurs at a crucial moment, with the World Cup set to begin in six months’ time. The move back to the Premier League is seen as an opportunity for him to strengthen his case for a place in England’s squad this summer. For Tottenham, his signing provides a timely boost in midfield, with Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison currently sidelined through long-term injuries.
Tottenham are next in action at home to West Ham at 10 PM on 22 January (GMT+7), a match in which Gallagher could make his debut. Shortly after, Spurs will face Borussia Dortmund in the penultimate round of the Champions League Swiss Stage on 21 January.
