Mbappé wins court case against PSG, awarded €60m
After leaving PSG in the summer of 2024 to join Real Madrid, Mbappé filed a lawsuit against the French club, initially claiming €263 million in unpaid wages and bonuses. The France captain described the case as a “contract dispute” and cited “ill-treatment” by the club. In November, the case was heard at the Paris labour court, which has now ruled that PSG must pay €60 million to the player.
According to the court’s decision, PSG failed to pay Mbappé three months’ salary between April and June 2024, as well as ethics-related and signing bonuses. Mbappé’s lawyer said they were “satisfied with the ruling” and suggested the case may now be closed. They added: “This judgment confirms that commitments entered into must be honoured. It restores a simple truth: even in the professional football industry, labour law applies to everyone.”
PSG released a statement following the verdict, saying: “Paris Saint-Germain takes note of the judgment pronounced by the Paris Labour Court, which it will execute, while reserving the right to appeal. Paris Saint-Germain has always acted in good faith and with integrity, and will continue to do so. The club is now looking to the future, based on unity and collective success, and wishes the player the best for the rest of his career.”
The club also accused Mbappé of concealing his intentions for nearly a year, from July 2022 to June 2023, before ultimately deciding to leave when his contract expired in 2024, despite PSG’s efforts to persuade him to sign a new deal. The relationship between the two sides deteriorated significantly, with head coach Luis Enrique even benching Mbappé at one point, before later reinstating him and allowing him to see out his contract ahead of a free transfer to Real Madrid.
Mbappé joined PSG from Monaco in 2017, initially on loan before completing a permanent move worth up to €180 million. During more than seven years at the club, he scored 256 goals in 308 appearances, became PSG’s all-time leading scorer, and won 15 trophies, though he never lifted the Champions League. Now at Real Madrid, Mbappé is currently the club’s top scorer and has quickly become a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s system.
