Marcus Rashford unlikely to return to Man United despite Amorim’s departure

Despite Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, the chances of Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United next season remain low. The England forward is currently on loan at Barcelona, where he has delivered a strong performances.

Rashford was left out of United’s long-term plans after Amorim arrived at the club in 2024. Following a half-season loan spell at Aston Villa, he moved to Barcelona on another loan deal until the end of the season. Since joining the Spanish side, Rashford has become one of Hansi Flick’s key attacking players, scoring seven goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions.

However, Rashford is not expected to return to Old Trafford when his loan ends this summer. According to The Sun, the decision to send Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Jadon Sancho out on loan was not made by Amorim, but by United’s senior leadership, led by sporting director Jason Wilcox.

Rashford has also made it clear that he wants to stay at Barcelona. Speaking to SPORT in December last year, the 28-year-old said: “Of course what I want is to stay at Barça. It's an ultimate goal, but it's not the reason I'm training hard and doing my best. The purpose is to win. Barça is a huge, fantastic club, built to win titles”.

So far, Barcelona have not opened formal talks with Manchester United over a permanent move. The loan agreement includes a buy option that can be activated in the summer of 2026, with a reported fee of around €30 million. However, given the club’s current financial situation, Barcelona are expected to proceed with caution before making a final decision.

Barcelona still Rashford's top priority

Rashford is not the only loaned player whose future at United appears uncertain. Rasmus Hojlund has impressed at Napoli, where he has scored nine league goals and developed strong partnerships with players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay.

Andre Onana has become the first-choice goalkeeper at Trabzonspor, while Jadon Sancho’s situation remains unclear. The winger has struggled for a regular role under Unai Emery and is unlikely to stay at Aston Villa once his loan spell ends.

As things stand, it appears that several players currently out on loan have reached the end of their Manchester United careers. Regardless of their form elsewhere, a return to Old Trafford looks unlikely, no matter who takes charge of the club in the future.
