Kylian Mbappe gestures his apology to Monaco fans on his Ronaldo record-breaking day

Kylian Mbappe continued to underline his growing importance at Real Madrid by scoring twice in a dominant 6-1 victory over AS Monaco in the Champions League. The brace took the French forward to 11 goals in six matches this season, equalling a long-standing club record previously set by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Since joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2024, Mbappe has quickly established himself as a central figure in the team. His impact has been immediate, with consistent scoring and decisive performances in key matches. Against Monaco, he once again led the attack, showing sharp movement, composure in front of goal, and strong understanding with his teammates.

The two goals lifted Mbappe’s Champions League tally to 11 after six appearances in the Swiss Stage. This matches the record Ronaldo set during the 2015/16 season, when the competition was still played in a traditional group-stage format.

Ronaldo finished that campaign with 16 goals as Real Madrid went on to win the trophy. His most prolific season in the competition remains 2013/14, when he scored 17 goals and helped the club claim the title.

Real Madrid have played seven Champions League matches this season, but Mbappe missed the 1-2 defeat to Manchester City through injury. In the six matches he has played, he failed to score only against Juventus and Liverpool. His record still includes notable performances, with four goals against Olympiacos and a hat-trick against Kairat.

Mbappe also attracted attention for his reaction after opening the scoring against Monaco. He raised both hands in an apologetic gesture towards the visiting supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Monaco is the club where he began his professional career and won his first Ligue 1 title in the 2016/17 season. During his time there, he scored 27 goals in 60 appearances.

In 2017, Mbappe left Monaco to join Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around 180 million euros. He went on to win multiple domestic titles in France, but Champions League success eluded him. The gesture towards Monaco fans highlighted the respect he still holds for his former club, nearly eight years after his departure.
