Hansi Flick reveals reason to bench Lamine Yamal in Super Cup win

In Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, Lamine Yamal did not start and was only brought on in the 72nd minute. After the match, head coach Hansi Flick explained why the 18-year-old winger began the game on the bench.

Barcelona dominated the semi-final on Wednesday night, scoring four goals in the first half through four different players. In the second half, Raphinha completed his brace to seal a comfortable 5-0 victory.

Yamal’s absence from the starting lineup came as a surprise. He replaced Roony Bardghji in the 72nd minute but did not score, with Barcelona maintaining their five-goal lead until full time.

Before the match, Yamal was seen missing training, and Flick clarified the situation after the game. “He had some discomfort the last few days. He couldn’t train these past few days, which is why he was on the bench. It has nothing to do with the injury; it was a stomach problem,” Flick said.

Despite Yamal’s limited involvement, Barcelona produced an impressive performance. Raphinha scored twice, while Fermin Lopez, Ferran Torres and Roony Bardghji also found the net. Flick expressed his satisfaction after the match and praised Raphinha in particular.

“We did everything right, I’m very satisfied. We kept a clean sheet again. That gives us confidence defensively,” he added. “I’m very happy for Raphinha. He gives his all on the field and is a great example for everyone.”

Yamal is expected to be available for the Spanish Super Cup final on 12 January. Barcelona will face the winner of the other semi-final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. The club are aiming for their 16th Spanish Super Cup title and their third triumph in Saudi Arabia.

This is the sixth time the Spanish Super Cup has been held in Saudi Arabia since the format was introduced in 2020. Barcelona previously won the trophy in 2023 and 2025, both times defeating Real Madrid in the final. Based on their current form, Barcelona head into the final as strong favorites at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.
