Former Premier League star escapes serious neck injury at AFCON
The incident happened in the 92nd minute, with Mali leading 1–0 and only moments left in the game. Daka scored to make it 1-1, securing a crucial point for Zambia.
While celebrating, Daka attempted a backflip in front of teammates and fans. However, the Leicester City striker landed awkwardly on his neck, causing immediate concern among players and supporters, especially as this was Zambia’s opening match of AFCON 2025.
Fortunately, Daka was able to get back on his feet with help from teammates and continued the match. The score remained 1–1 until full time, giving Zambia their first point of the tournament. There has been no official update on Daka’s condition since the match, suggesting he avoided serious injury and should be available for upcoming games.
The match itself was a tough contest for Zambia. Mali missed a first-half penalty after El Bilal Touré’s effort was saved by goalkeeper Willard Mwanza. Touré later made amends by scoring the opening goal in the 61st minute, before Daka’s late strike rescued a draw for Zambia.
Daka remains a familiar name to Premier League fans. He joined Leicester City in 2021 and stayed with the club despite their relegation last season. Following Jamie Vardy’s departure, Daka now serves mainly as a backup to 34-year-old Jordan Ayew. Leicester are currently struggling in the Championship, sitting mid-table at the halfway point of the season.
At AFCON 2025, Zambia are in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Mali and Comoros. While beating Morocco will be a major challenge, Zambia face Comoros first on 27 December, where a win would significantly boost their chances of reaching the round of 16. They will then play Morocco on 30 December.
