Vincent Aboubakar emerged as the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations Golden Boot, following a prolific tournament for the Cameroon captain. He was in outstanding form throughout the competition, scoring braces against both Burkina Faso and Ethiopia to help the host nation secure qualification for the round of 16 with a match to spare. Aboubakar continued to build on his tally with a goal in the draw against Cape Verde, before extending his scoring streak in the knockout stages with strikes against Comoros and once again against Burkina Faso.

After an impressive individual campaign at the tournament, Aboubakar continued his club career with Al Nassr, but his situation changed following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022. The Cameroonian forward subsequently returned to his former club Beşiktaş for the third time in his career, where he delivered a run of consistent performances before internal disputes with the coaching staff surfaced toward the end of 2023. As of early 2026, recent reports indicate that Aboubakar is playing for Neftçi PFK in the Azerbaijan Premier League. He joined the Baku-based side as a free agent in October 2025 and has since established himself as the club’s leading striker.

Cameroon international Karl Toko Ekambi, a teammate of the Indomitable Lions, also enjoyed an impressive AFCON campaign, finishing not far behind the tournament’s top scorers. Representing the host nation, the forward made a strong impact by netting five goals in six appearances, playing a crucial role in Cameroon’s run to a third-place finish at the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations. He was particularly influential in victories over Ethiopia and Gambia, scoring braces in both matches as Cameroon secured convincing wins of 4–1 and 2–0 respectively.

Following his standout performances at AFCON 2022, Toko Ekambi later moved away from European football in favor of the Middle East. After a short loan spell at Rennes and his permanent exit from Lyon, the Cameroonian forward spent time in Saudi Arabia with several clubs before completing a move to Al-Arabi SC in Qatar in January 2026. He has since established himself as an important attacking presence, brought in to address a key gap in the squad’s offensive setup.

Gabadinho Mhango of Malawi, Ibrahima Koné of Mali and Sadio Mané all finished the tournament with three goals. Mané played a decisive role in guiding Senegal to AFCON glory, edging Mohamed Salah’s Egypt, who ended the competition as runners-up. The former African Player of the Year struck three times for Aliou Cissé’s Senegal side, opening their scoring account against Zimbabwe before adding further goals against Cape Verde in the Round of 16 and Burkina Faso in the semi-finals. Mané also delivered in the defining moment, converting the decisive penalty in Senegal’s 4-2 shootout victory over Egypt in the final of the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations, as the Lions of Teranga finally lifted the trophy after falling short in the 2002 and 2019 finals.

By 2025, Mané returned to the summit of African football through a different kind of excellence—one defined by composure, leadership and authority. As captain, he led Senegal to victory at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, earning the Player of the Tournament award. Rather than being recognised for an avalanche of goals, the honour reflected his lasting influence in every decisive match. In the final against the host nation, amid an electric atmosphere, Mané personified calm and stability—the presence that united the team, reassured his teammates and restored order when pressure threatened to overwhelm them. It is in such moments, when football transcends the scoreline, that the game’s greatest individual accolades are often decided.
